GEM MOTEL - INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA - 1992
The Gem motel had gone from a quaint little motel to a run down dive, rented out as weekly apartments. The charm once found in the courtyard setting had given way to overgrown weeds, crushed beer cans and cigarette butts. I found some reasonably clear space to set up my 11x14 view camera on the west side of the sign. The summer sky was overcast and diffuse, perfect for softening shadows. I managed to frame up the shot, exposed the film and high tailed it out of there within a half hour. The sign eventually succumbed to the ravages of time and is no longer standing. I captured this image on my 11x14 Wisner using Kodak Tri-X film.
